Game Review: Suikoden I & II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars

by | Mar 22, 2025

If you’re into classic JRPGs, Suikoden I & II HD Remaster is a fantastic throwback. These games first came out in the ’90s, when turn-based RPGs thrived on storytelling, unforgettable characters, and rich world-building. Back then, Google was barely a thing, so my brother and I would exchange notes — which, let’s be honest, meant doing nasty favors and trading chores — just to make sure we didn’t miss any of the 100+ characters, all in our own separate playthroughs (no save sharing, btw).

Just keep in mind — this is a remaster of two classic ’90s games, not a flashy 2025 blockbuster. You won’t find cinematic cutscenes, massive open worlds, or deep, modern-style character arcs. What you will find is a lovingly preserved slice of JRPG history that still holds up surprisingly well.

What It’s All About

The collection bundles together two separate wars set in the same world, decades apart.

Suikoden I: The Gate Rune War follows the son of a legendary Imperial general who’s thrust into rebellion after the corrupt Scarlet Moon Empire turns on his family and the people he cares about. Branded a traitor, he inherits the Soul Eater — one of the 27 True Runes — and ends up leading a growing resistance against the Empire, gathering allies from every corner of the land to fight back.

Suikoden II: The Dunan Unification War picks up the story in a new region, where a close friendship is torn apart by war between two former allies — the City-State of Jowston and the militaristic Highland Kingdom. The protagonist, betrayed and left for dead, ends up bearing the Bright Shield Rune and slowly builds a new nation from the ground up, all while an old friend ends up on the opposite side of the conflict.

Both games share the same core idea: the hero isn’t just some lone chosen one. The real heart of Suikoden is building your own army — recruiting over 100 characters, each with their own stories, personalities, and unique abilities. Tracking them all down is half the fun and incredibly addictive!!!

The Good Stuff

The remaster does a great job polishing the visuals without losing that nostalgic pixel charm. The soundtrack still slaps — those tunes will get stuck in your head for days. Combat is classic turn-based: smooth and easy to pick up.

What really makes Suikoden shine are the mini-games — from cook-offs to fishing to tense rock climbing — offering fun breaks from the main story. And the recruitment hunt itself is a game in its own right; every character you track down adds something to your castle, your army, or just the overall texture of the world.

The story in both games is packed with political drama, shifting alliances, and betrayals that actually hit. Suikoden II in particular is often held up as one of the best-written JRPGs of its era, and playing it back to back with the first game gives you a real appreciation for how the story of the True Runes and the world builds across both.

⚠️ Spoiler Territory

If you want to go in blind, skip this section.

The connective tissue between the two games is one of the best parts of this remaster. Characters, choices, and consequences from Suikoden I ripple forward into Suikoden II in ways that reward people who played (or are replaying) both back to back — small cameos, references, and callbacks that hit a lot harder now that both games are bundled together instead of scattered across old hardware.

Suikoden II’s central betrayal — the fracture between the protagonist and his closest friend — still stings just as much on replay, maybe more once you know it’s coming and start noticing the small foreshadowing moments you missed the first time. And chasing the true ending in either game means being deliberate about who you recruit and how you treat certain characters along the way, which is exactly the kind of thing that used to require a notebook and a sibling willing to trade favors for spoilers.
